Regenerate Asia with NbS

From weather-related risks and health inequities arising from climate change to food insecurity due to biodiversity, all socio-environmental challenges cannot be addressed as isolated problems. We need approaches that are holistic and regenerative.

Nature-based solutions (NbS) offer a path forward.

These are some examples of NbS across sectors: Blue-Green Infrastructure, Climate-Smart Agriculture approaches such as Agroecology and Regenerative Farming, Climate-Resilient Infrastructure, Disaster Risk Reduction, Ecosystem-Based Adaptation and Mitigation, Green Architecture, Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration, and Payment for Ecosystem Services

Uniting Disciplines and Sectors

NbS's application goes beyond agriculture! NbS can unite 'regenerators' from all disciplines and sectors to co-design systems that restore ecosystems while supporting human well-being.

From architects who reimagine cities as living landscapes, to engineers developing climate-resilient infrastructure; from bankers and investors financing impactful ventures, to designers, farmers, innovators, and researchers crafting circular economies — as a socioecological economist, I see all professions having a role in shaping a nature-based, people- and planet-centric future.

Diversity is Key

To recognise that socioecological issues are interconnected is also to recognise that solutions need to address multiple issues for multiple stakeholders, especially if we want to build adaptive and resilient social and ecological systems.

To do that, we need diversity of expertise, experience, and aspiration; we need sectors to work together to co-create practical and scalable solutions.

An Asia-centric Movement

Asia is home to some of the world’s richest biodiversity and holds immense natural capital — from tropical forests and coral reefs to fertile deltas and mountain ecosystems — that sustain billions of lives.

Asia’s human capital — our engineers, entrepreneurs, farmers, indigenous communities, innovators, scientists, and more — embodies a wealth of traditional and modern knowledge. Asia needs a movement to power a socioecologically just transition that is shaped by the regional realities, cultural diversity, and ecological wealth, that can regenerate Asia for Asians.
